PapugLinux 07.1

Dear all,

With the fresh Gentoo 2007.0 released in the past days, the PapugLinux 07.1 is now under development. We choose to follow  the Gentoo release plan (and delay) to provide a more stable version.

PapugLinux is planed to be released in the mid-june but we're too early in the integration process to confirm or even give a more concrete date.

We hope this new release will give you satisfaction and will be used by previous and new PapugLinux users.

Hi, Any idea when 07.1 will be released?

I would like to be able to do a Hard Drive install to my old IBM ThinkPad 380XD laptop.

CPU P2-233MMX, 96MB Ram, 4Gig Hard Drive.

Orinoco Classic Gold Wireless Lan Card.

Hi Ken,

The 07.1 release should be ready before the middle of jully. Sorry to be late but I didn't had as much time as I'd like to spend on the project for few last weeks.

Hi, OK. Thanks for the update on release dates.

I am also wondering about a Hard Drive install utility?

Would it also be possible to include support for the Orinoco Clasic Gold Wireless cards?

This particular card is very popular, has been around a long time and is used by many people.

Gentoo-Portage offer the drivers and utilities.

I tried your 06.2 Live CD and it loaded and ran very nicely on my old Laptop.

Unfortunalty it didn't seem to detect the Wlan card.

Hi,

In looked at your Orinoco driver and saw that the package orinoco-sn you're talking about is conflicting with the kernel 2.6.20 module 'WLan Hermes (orinoco)' .

As I don't have any way to test it, if you wish I can desactivate the driver from the kernel to use the one provided in the package orinoco-sn.

Cheers,

Some research is needed I think with the Orinoco WLan driver's.

There are definatly problems.

Even with the 2007.0 true release of GenToo the Orinoco Wlan driver /  utilities are broken.

This issue has been known for some time and still hasn't been addressed by GenToo. As a search on some forums will indicate.

If you are able to include the drivers from the portage site in a pre-release ISO. I'd be happy to test them for you to some degree. (Best of my ability as a N00b) :)

A hard drive install script in the distro would also be a big bonus.

Hi Ken,

I think I don't have any good news for you ! The orinoco driver from portage is not compiling and after some search, the guy from orinoco-patch said he had problem with the 2.6.20 kernel (www.projectiwear.org/~plasmahh/orinoco.html). I've also tried with the 0.15 release from www.nongnu.org/orinoco/ and it didn't want to compile with the same kind of error. I'm affraid I'll not be able to include this for the release wich is planned in the next days (currently packaged and under testing).

I'll be happy to make an intermediate snapshot for your testing in a couple of weeks. For the install script, I didn't forget, but I couldn't work enough on this subject. Maybe we could work together on it.

Cheers,

Hi, OK thanks for the update.

Yes it would be great to work more on this. Many people use this very common WiFi card on their old laptops. THe two go together very well with your project of GenToo on old equipment. In fact on Ebay many Oronico Classic Gold cards sell every day. This shows a big interest. Many people live in poor countries and can not afford cuting edge equipment. For this reason I am so impressed with what you are doing here.

My knowledge of Linux is very minimal. In fact I am counting on your distro to get me started again on having Linux on my PC's here again.

What ever help I can give to assist in bringing Oronico drivers and hard drive install to your distro I gladly offer.

Hi, I have just tried the 07.1 release.

- The Keyboard does not default to US and has to be changed each boot.

- I could not work out how to get Root access.

When I tried to use the Iwconfig to see if I could set up the PCMCIA wireless card it said I needed Root access.

Hi,

The root password is 'papuglinux', I know this is not the best choosen pasword with the default FR keyboard layout. For this last point, we had to choose one and we choosed the one from the country origin of the distrubition.

Thank's for your feedback

OK, thanks for the password.

I have just installed Sabayon (Gentoo) on one of my desktops and it is wonderful.

I am still very keen to see an automated hard drive install written for Papug linux.

I still have two small laptops here that only have 96MB ram and I would love to install Papug on them.
